Berean Literal Bible + 1 John 3:7-17 + Scofield's Notes
Berean Literal Bible + 1 John 3:7-17 + Scofield's Notes
Have you heard of the Bereans? Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true (Acts 17:11)
I'm really appreciating the work those from Biblehub.com have accomplished with their Berean Bible translations. They made a study version, an interlinear (which is pretty nice compared to others), a literal translation, and an annotated one. All of these are useful in different ways. This was a smaller team of translators but they took it seriously and they used a lot of input from volunteer scholars and bible students from all around. They have an open concept of sharing the text and their struggling notes for translating. Let's read their literal bible translation. If you've searched for a Scripture online before you've probably clicked on biblehub.com. The nice feature about that site is that it automatically shows a verse with many parallel translations. So you default into noticing differences in how a verse is translated. When I'm studying I often am using that tool just for how quick it is to sift through translations. (I like biblegateway for ease of searching a favorite translation, and blueletterbible for quickly creating word-studies)
Let's continue moving through 1st John in our slow meditative way (1 John 3:7-17).
For a commentary this week let's use Scofield's notes from 1917. Of all study bibles to own on your shelf, this may be the most famous and most useful. You should probably have a physical copy of this one, though I wouldn't recommend it as your main Bible since you'll always be tempted to look at his notes. But when we're studying something and we get to this point, it's great to see what Scofield wrote.
Remember, with the commentaries if you don't have the time to read the whole thing, pick a section that you're especially focusing on and try to read all of the notes on that section. Then later you can go back and finish reading about the rest of 1st John. For many of us, that section may be the first chapter or first four verses, but I hope some have picked an odd section like about testing spirits or the sin unto death.
