And God said, Let the earth cause grass to spring up, herb producing seed, fruit-tress yielding fruit after their kind, the seed of which is in them, on the earth. And it was so (Genesis 1:11).In the creation account of Genesis 1, there is also a spiritual aspect to the history being described. Just as the earth had it's new creation physically, so we also have spiritually entered into the new creation:
So if any one be in Christ, there is a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold all things have become new (2nd Corinthians 5:17).In comparing our experience with Genesis 1, we can learn about this new creation that we've been brought into. For example, we already know the meaning of day 1 from 2nd Corinthians 4:6:
Because it is the God who spoke that out of darkness light should shine who has shone in our hearts for the shining forth of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. When Paul was saved, the light had shown all around and especially in his heart. In the face of Jesus Christ, he saw the light of the glory of God. This light of the gospel began a new day in him as he had his first experience of the new creation.
I was meditating on day 3 this morning and noticed especially the grass that sprang up on the newly raised ground. Day 3 speaks of the resurrection aspect of our new life in Christ. Out of the waters of "waste and emptiness" comes ground raised up above. Then grass springs up and herbs and fruit trees. We who are believers are given a new life, and it is the very life of Christ. His life went through death and rose up out of it. Then we were given that life based on believing in His resurrection.
But here's what caught my attention: the grass. When I think of resurrection life, my ideal image is of the fruit trees. I want to see a believer always living so above the death around them. I want to think that everyone can eat of the fruit of that life. The fruit of resurrection life is so abundant with its own seeds for producing more fruit. Sometimes that is the experience, and it is obvious. But more often than that is the resurrection grass experience. The ground is there. The land has overcome the waters. The field is even covered with life! But that life is more like little green grass. It's not as noticeable, it's not as unusual to others, but it is attached to the ground, and it is life.
How often am I discouraged because my life is not overflowing with fruit as it aught? It's not obviously helpful to everyone. But there is no need to be discouraged; grass comes before fruit trees. Just be attached to Christ. Just cling to Him like the grass of the field on resurrection ground. There is life there, and it is satisfying to God, "And God saw that it was good" (v.12). God has a variety of resurrection life for us to experience, and the most basic grass-like resurrection life is pleasing to Him.
